Occurrences of the number 108 - 1008

Just recently, a reader of this blog emailed me about the strange occurrences of the number "108" or "1008" in the times my posts were published and asked me if I was somehow "rigging" the times. To my knowledge, there isn't a way to "rig" the times. The times and dates cannot be edited or altered and updating an article does not change the original publishing time and date. The time is not even in my time zone and is off by several hours.

I found these occurrences of the number 108 and 1008 to be amusing since I had not noticed them before. Although I am not into numerology or a believer that the number "108" or "1008" are particularly auspicious or significant, it appears that many cultures and religions attribute signifance to these numbers (including Sanjay's belief system).

There is even a Wikipedia article on the number 108.

  • One hundred [and] eight is an abundant number, a tetranacci number.
  • It is the hyperfactorial of 3.
  • 108 is a number that is divisible by the value of its φ function, which is 36.
  • 108 is also divisible by the total number of its divisors (12), hence it is a refactorable number.
  • In normal space, the interior angles of an equilateral pentagon measure 108 degrees each.
  • There are 108 free polyominoes of order 7.
  • In base 10, it is a Harshad number and a self number.
  • The number 108 is considered sacred or auspicious in a number of cultures, especially eastern ones such as: India, China, Japan, Tibet, Korea,Thailand.
  • The number 108 is considered sacred or auspicious in a number of religions, especially eastern ones such as: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, Shinto.

Update: September 4th 2006:
Sanjay Dadlani pointed out that there is a way to "rig" the times and dates on blogger. Although Sanjay insists I rigged the times, all I can say is that I did not "rig" them and the times are actual posted times.
